Update
of the Club Status for all members past and present
I
would like to thank all members and their families of the S-M-S-C for
their efforts throughout the year with the help organising events and
competitions, as we are all aware nothing just happens, it is with your
dedication and determination that we make the most of our very fickle
swell. We are not blessed with the consistent waves that give our South
West friends so much water time.
Unfortunately
we require a good forecast to coincide with the correct tide times and
this year this just has not happened, hence the lack of Club
competitions. Let’s hope this situation improves as I am always being
asked when the next Competition is. The small entry fee also helps with
club funds.
We
have to congratulate our juniors for their excellent results in the BLU
competitions that have been running throughout the year. Their parents
are to be commended for their support and resoluteness in ensuring that
the surfers are where they should be regardless of the location.
Ryan
Hammond is placed 2nd in the UK with James Kirk 5th and Tom Cross 7th,
all placed in the top 10. Their performances and recognition have
helped bring the Surf Club and the North East Coast to the attention of
fellow competitors and Surf Companies who until recently were under the
impression that good surfers only came from Cornwall.
Special
thanks go to all the competitors and supporters who made the journey to
Gwithian to the British Longboard Club Championships. The weather and
surfing conditions were not the best for driving, camping or surfing.
Team A did exceptionally well bringing home the trophy for 2nd place;
this is on display in Fluid Concept Shop on the Spa. It must be
something to do with youth as 4 of the team members were under 18. Team
B competed valiantly as they were placed 6th, this is not confirmed as
the score sheets went astray in the wind but we are sticking to the
result of the time. This has helped tremendously in raising the profile
of the Club again it has brought the North East to the attention of
others.
We
had the privilege of hosting the British Longboard Club Championships
in 2002 which was a great success and was well documented by local and
National media, mainly due to the help of all the Club members. We have
been asked to host the Championships in 2008, September 20th &
21st
with the back up dates of October 4th & 5th. I would like to
ask
for your help and support with the event as there is a lot to organise
prior to the actual Competition day.
We
are in the process of looking for sponsorship as it is quite a costly
process, T shirts, posters and the like. I have already approached
Yorkshire Water who helped us last time but cannot get commitment as
yet. Rich has tried various companies and is awaiting response. We will
persevere and keep every one informed at meetings and on the web site.
We
are still suffering with the North South divide despite this year’s
outstanding success. We are not too proud to accept sponsorship from
almost anyone.
All
who are no longer members of the Surf Club, surfing stays with you for
life, rethink and be a part of our recent and hopefully future
achievements.
We
have some excellent young female surfers who will hopefully continue
with the sport and be rewarded with good health, good outlook on life
and good progress.
The
younger members are the future of the club and surfing in our region we
wish them advancement and enjoyment in their chosen fun time sport.

This
year we are hoping to organize a lot more competitions and family fun
days out. With the lack of waves and bad weather, last year
was a
bit of a flop.
If anybody has any ideas on different ways club members can get
together (keep it clean) let Phil know.
We
still have club t-shirts for sale. Please let Rebecca know if you want
to purchase one or two, they come in kaki or light blue.
CLUB
CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION
This year Scarborough is to host the Club Championship
Competition.
The dates earmarked for the event is 21st 22nd September 2008. We have
notified the B.S.A and the B.L.U.
We are hoping to have 120 competing surfers enter and a team from
Hawaii has also shown an interest in entering the comp!
A
separate committee has been elected to organise the competition, but
anyone with wishing to get involved, please let Staurt know - this is a
large event which will need a lot of organising
Ideas are sought
for raising sponsorship money to help fund the comp. It’s a great
opportunity for companies to advertise and associate themselves with
one of the most prestigious surfing events in the UK - any ideas are
welcome.
